Outdoor Gear Industry News - Kelty, Sierra Designs, Slumberjack sold
Feb 27th, 2008 by admin
Kellwood Co. signs off on a buyout of three of their outdoor gear companies based in Boulder, Colorado. At $21 per share and a sale price of $544 million Kellwood sells Kelty, Sierra Designs, and Slumberjack.
After twice rebuking offers from Sun Capital earlier this year, Kellwood’s board called the most recent $21 per share purchase price “fair” and recommended that shareholders accept the offer.
Kellwood recently reorganized its Boulder presence. The company expanded Kelty Inc. at 6205 Lookout Road and then moved Louisville-based Sierra Designs and St. Louis-based Slumberjack to spaces next to Kelty in the same building.
Kelty designs and markets an array of outdoor goods and gear including tents, backpacks and sleeping bags. Sierra Designs designs and markets tents and sleeping bags. Slumberjack designs and markets sleeping bags, sleeping bag covers and mats for camping.

When ever a consolidation happens like this the quality of the products usually goes down. The new owner cuts corners to get his $ back.

Ted,
Here’s hoping this time is unusual but I have to say I fear you might be right. It would be a real shame too because I actually really think Sierra Designs in particular has some great design ideas for the price.
