It’s the 1st weekend in January and we jumped the gun a little bit. We headed up to Beech this morning and were a little disappointed when we arrived. We thought the recent precipitation and cold temps we’ve been having in the Southeast would have been kinder to the ski resorts. Not so, and yes their websites had given fairly accurate information on slope conditions and let you know that only a small portion of the slopes are open, but we thought the open ones would be in better condition and the crowds would be a little bit lighter.
Our kids have skied before, but our 5 year old was stoked to get on a snowboard for the first time. Unfortunately, they didn’t have a small enough boot size or small enough board for him. We figured it may be a bad idea to buy them boards only to have them grow out of them in 5 minutes but its looking like that may have to be an option at this point.
The result was that we ended up playing around a bit in the snow than and then went to find our hotel to avoid crowds and try our luck again at Sugar Mountain the next day.

We were having a little trouble as tired as we were finding where we were staying and this nice guy at Henderson’s gas station in Morganton along 70 gave us the directions we needed along with all sorts of great information on the restaurants in the area.
All in all it was really fun in spite of the lack of snow. My daughter has made her way up the mountain and is handling herself quite well. My son is picking up steam and get some good turns already too. It was so warm they didn’t even want to wear there gloves anymore.

Ha, mainly the 5 hour drive up there. But also, I was running all over the place before I got on my board, trying to get the kids up to speed again at the first of the season. I am sure I looked like a real fool running all over the bunny slope.

Yep, thats right! Why don’t you get off your butt and come with us next time we go! Sorry it sounds like we will miss the chance to get together with you guys this weekend. How about the following weekend?
