Kayaking-Etowah River-372 to East Cherokee
Nov 20th, 2011 by Admin 1
The Etowah River offers a little for every paddler depending on the section of the river you run. There are plenty points of interest along the way from rope swings and waterfalls to remnants of old cold war testing facilities, and even rapids down underground tunnels! Some sections offer class III rapids, while other portions of the river are just a lazy float with a few minor shoals. I have paddled this particular section from Highway 372 to East Cherokee Drive three times now and would have to classify this section into the lazy float category. With that being said, this is a nice short run great for a quick outing and it its just a short drive from Canton, Georgia where we live which makes it even better.
So, if you are looking for a place to kayak near Canton and either consider yourself a beginner, want to float with the family or are a seasoned pro but just want a nice relaxing run this is a good bet. At around 4 miles its short enough to avoid fatigue and offers just enough small shoals to keep your interest.
Put In:
From Ball Ground- take Hwy 372 south about 3 miles to the bridge, parking is on left after bridge.
Take Out:
On I-575 drive North Airport Rd. and turn right. This will dead end into Canton Highway. Turn left. Drive 1.1 miles and turn right on East Cherokee Drive.
- Distance: Approx. 3.5 - 4 miles
- River Difficulty: Beginner (Class I)
- Avg Gradient: 5.5 fpm
