Watkins Glen State Park

We recently escaped the southern heat by taking a 10 day trip to the Finger Lakes region of NY. We were able to check out a couple camp spots while we were there and would like to share our experiences. First I’d like to say that if you’ve never visited the NY countryside you are missing out. We are fortunate that our family has a couple lake cottages up there so we have been able to spend some time in the area.
Watkins Glen State Park is a beautiful place to visit. Close to Ithaca and Cornell at the Southern end of Seneca lake. The hike up the glen is a favorite of ours and we have done it several times. It’s a little touristy and there are some man-made elements that you might think would ruin the beauty, but not so.
The hike is very easy up or down the gorge and is suitable for young children. It does get a little slippery in spots, but is still pretty easy. It’s very picturesque and an awesome thing see how the gorge was created by the water. There are several pools and waterfalls along the way as well as greenery growing along the walls of shale rock. Definitely worth checking out if you’re in the area.
