Providence Canyon State Park - Canyon Loop Trail
Feb 24th, 2009 by Admin 1
Providence Canyon State Parks Canyon Loop Trail is a short loop trail that circles nine of the 16 canyons. The trail provides opportunities to explore the canyons as well as views from above all along the rim.
Trailhead Location: Begins at interpretive center
Trail Length: 2.45 miles
Difficulty: Easy to Moderate
Trail Marker: White Blaze
Parking Fee: $3
Contact: Providence Canyon State Park, 8930 Canyon Road, Lumpkin, GA 31815 or Route 1, Box 158, Lumpkin, GA 31815
Park: 229-838-6202 Reservations: 800-864-7275
Directions: U.S. Highway 27 to Lumpkin. Head west on Georgia Hwy 39C seven miles to park entrance.

The Canyon Loop trail leaves the interpretive center heads 1/4 mile down to the creek bed through a few switchbacks. The trail is marked with white blazes and is easy to follow. Once you are down to the creek bed at the base of the canyon, you can go left into canyons 1-3 and 4&5 or cross the creek bed continuing on the white blazed Loop trail to access 6-9. This is a short 2.45 mile hike but I recommend allotting plenty of time to explore the canyons during the loop.
After returning to the loop trail from the canyons take a left. Just before you reach the old cars section You will see where the Backcountry Trail (red blaze) intersects into the trail to your right. These 50’s era cars provide a habitat for the animals.
Once beyond the cars the views open up and you will have plenty of opportunities to look down into the canyon floor from the rim as you follow the fence line back to the interpretive center.

All our pictures from last weekend are winter shots of course so we may go back between July and September when the wildflowers and Plumleaf Azalea typically bloom.

Nice job. We are thinking of heading there in March. I have lived in Ga most of my life and have never been exploring in this part of the state. Will probably try to stay at Rood Creek campsite too. Thanks for the posts. Great pics.
Andy,
Thanks! Glad to hear this was helpful. Another option for camping if you are going with a group would be the Pioneer Camping at Providence Canyon but you would need 10 or more people to stay there.
