Pinhoti Trail - Snake Creek Gap
Dec 22nd, 2007 by admin
We just took the kids and went on the Pinhoti Trail which is located off of 136 W in Northwest Georgia. We were a little disappointed at first when pulling into the parking lot because of the trash left at the edge of the trailhead, but once we got onto the trail we were pleasantly impressed and surprised at how well kept it was. It definitely has some natural beauty as the trail runs through the boulder laden under story. There are four long and varied switchbacks at the beginning that makes it an easy to moderate hike. If you have an active family and your kids are used to hiking you should do well on this one.
For those that will be mountain biking its a pretty smooth, wider single track with some great views at the crest and beyond after the first four switchbacks. We took our dog Kaiser and he is now 12 weeks old and is already a great little hiker. Leashes are required so keep that in mind when packing things up. Also, be thoughtful of other hikers and bikers especially during the warmer seasons when the leaves are on the trees and there is less visibility on switchbacks. The great thing about this trail is that it extends the AT and makes the total length of the AT the longest in any state. Here are some photos from today but keep in mind its overcast and the second day of winter so I am going to try to get back up here in the early spring and do some backpacking from here up into the Cohuttas.
- From I75 take Exit 320 - Resaca/Lafayette. Head Northwest on 136
- Take a Right on 136 at T on the road (West)
- Go 3-4 miles and watch for signs for Pinhoti Trail @ Snake Creek Gap (Brown Sign) turn right into parking lot.
