I was recently reading Around Town - Canton Magazine, a local monthly distribution of around 15,000 copies that goes out to all Canton area residents. In this months issue there is an article about Garland Mountain, protected green space and a local resident Cindy Young and her great idea for a trail system for horseback riding and hiking. I was happy, to say the least, to hear a new trail will be opening up near Canton, Georgia that will be available to hikers.
It only took one email from Cindy to commissioner Harry Johnston to get this idea off the ground. Then Cindy and the Cherokee County Saddle Club President Marianne Torchia had a meeting with County manager Jerry Cooper and plans began to fall into place.
The Garland Mountain Trail is currently under way and should be ready by April ‘09. From this article it appears that a large tract of wilderness land at the top of Garland Mountain will be preserved and this will become the first public horse and hike trail in the county.
