Burnt Mountain

What a gorgeous day we had Saturday. We headed up to Burnt Mountain in Jasper, Ga. It seems we missed peak foliage by a few days, but it was still beautiful. We took some pics at the lookout on Hwy 136 then headed to the Burnt Mountain Preserve Trail.
The Burnt Mountain Preserve Trail was created and is maintained by Mountain Stewards who are responsible for several other trails in the area.
The trail starts off close to the hwy and shortly begins descending. If you decide to check it out, do wear shoes with decent tread. The forest is mostly hardwood with a few scrub pines, so it is very slippery with the heavy leaf cover. An advantage to this is the cleanliness of the understory. It’s not very brushy so visibility is good.
The trees along the way are tagged with descriptions of the species. As you descend along the trail, you come to a wooden bridge. The ground then levels off for a bit before you continue the descent . You lose about 400 feet in elevation before you head back to the trail head. Difficulty is moderate, but it’s not a long hike. I’d estimate about a mile-mile and a half. Good for a short workout or just to enjoy the natural beauty of the area.
The trail head is located in Pickens County on Hwy 136. If you are coming from Jasper look for the kiosk on the right. If you make it to the first lookout, you’ve gone too far. If you’re coming from Dawson County, turn left at the kiosk after the lookout.
