Arrowhead Wildlife Interpretive Trail

Today we decided to do a little more hiking in Georgia and check out the Arrowhead Wildlife Interpretive Trail just outside of Rome, Ga. It is an old fish hatchery that is run by the DNR. We had never been out there before, so we didn’t know what to expect. We just read it was one of the nicest short trails around. It’s only 2 miles so we thought it would be a great hike for the kids & dog.
When we got there we knew this wasn’t the kind of place we would frequent, very flat and not as scenic as we had hoped for. The trail is pretty much an unpaved road. It’s very grassy and open at the start, but after you pass a small swamp it begins to wind through the woods and into an open grassy field for wildlife grazing. The trail continues to another open area where the old hatchery ponds are.
There are wildlife and forestry signs along the trail. You’ll also see bat boxes, bird houses, and many different animal tracks. It makes for a nice relaxing hike for adults, but the kids were fascinated by the animal tracks. We were also able to let our dog off his leash as noone else was there.
In my opinion, it’s an OK hike if you’re in the general area, but I wouldn’t recommend it in the summer months. It offers minimal shade,is very brushy around the ponds, and the outlying areas are pretty swampy. The perfect environment for ticks and mosquitos.
Not recommended for serious hikers.
To get there from I-75 take exit 306.Go weston Hwy 140 to Hwy 27. Go North for 1-2
miles, turn East on Hwy 156 for about 2.3 miles then Left onto Floyd Springs Rd. Go North 2 miles to the DNR Regional Game Mgmt. HQ. The trailhead is in a gravel parking lot that has a big sign with the trail map on it.
