Amicalola River Thanksgiving Day
Nov 30th, 2008 by Admin 1
We had family in for the week so we took some of them for a short hike at Amicalola River access loop in the Dawson Forest on Thanksgiving day. I’ve written about this trail in an earlier post after a not so great experience, but we had perfect weather and the trail is much cleaner this time of year so we enjoyed the surroundings much more this time. Parking was also easier than usual, too. The lower part of the trail has been altered a bit with a boardwalk along the river that they have been working on for a while now. From the upper parking area, a new staircase descends to the boardwalk and handicap access is provided from the lower parking lot. The boardwalk winds for a while along the river and ends shortly before the trail branches off into the forest.

The trail is well marked with blue blazes and has wildlife signs along the way, though we really didn’t see much of what the signs were talking about. There is very obvious evidence of controlled burns which provide a very clean understory. Funny we don’t have a lot of forest fires where we’re allowed to do the burns.
The hike is short (about 2.25 mi) but fun and the varied terrain was enough to work up an appetite for our Thanksgiving dinner.
The trailhead is located on Hwy 53 just inside the Dawson County line.
