MSR Pocket Rocket Stove Review

I own one of these MSR Pocket Rocket stoves and have used it out on the trail several times now. I have to say, so far so good. I love it! I used to have a MSR Whisperlite which I thought was great and since its mysterious disappearance I’ve always assumed I’d just get another one of those. When I started shopping around for a new one and researching prices, weight etc.. I found that the Pocket Rocket was lighter, cheaper and stacked up extremely well when comparing the specs to its competition.
At just $39.95 currently and weighing only 3 oz its cheaper than most of the other backpacking stoves in its class. Its not the lightest but certainly comparable. In its price range you have a few like the Optimus Crux Lite at 3.3 oz, the MSR SuperFly at 4.6 oz , and just a bit lighter, the Coleman F1 Ultralight at 2.7. Being satisfied with the MSR brand in the past I went with the MSR. Now that I’ve used it several time I’ve found that it actually does better in the wind than some of the reviews I’ve read suggested. One of the things that I like the most is how compact it is even with the hard plastic case it comes with. I can fit a small lighter and even my small folding spoon into the case with it so their never left behind.
Overall, this is the perfect little stove for keeping it simple like just boiling water for coffee or your mountain house meal of choice. Its light weight, single burner that starts easy, boils quick and packs light and compact. All you really need most of the time.
