I have been backpacking for around 20 years now and over the years have used several different methods for packing water. The longer I do it the lighter I want my pack. If you are bit of a minimalist like myself the Katadyn MyBottle Microfilter Bottle is a great (Option A) for keeping your pack light. You can use it as a method of bringing less water and cut down considerably on your overall pack weight 
on trails you are familiar with. (Option B), also a good option, allows for a backup plan just incase you run out of the 5 Gallons you stuffed in your pack. 
Both are great reasons to have this little gear jem as part of your backpacking bag of tricks!
