Slickrock Wilderness Horse Cove Campground
As you will see, we here at campnpost are big fans of this whole area and North Carolina in general! Just off the Cherohala Skyway outside the entrance to Joyce Kilmer Memorial Forest is Horse Cove Campground, an easy access, paved road leads through this small campground that is set along
the Santeetlah Creek. Its situated quite comfortably with ferns and rhododendrons separating most the sites. Don’t let the word “paved” fool you, which usually brings about visions of big RVs, noisy generators, loud TV’s, and air conditioning (no offense RVers
), this campground is typically pretty quiet because many of the campers are using it as more of a base camp for the network of trails not much more than a couple hundred feet away. Though its easy access, it has a surprisingly rustic feel. There are no water and power hookups but there are restrooms an potable water so its perfect for tent campers and maybe pop-ups
Horse Cove makes a great spot to call home while taking advantage of all the available activities you can enjoy with your family like boating, hiking, fishing, swimming, canoeing, kayaking, cycling or just some site seeing around the lake
. The campground itself, which is actually divided by Joyce Kilmer Rd/SR1134, provides clean restrooms, garbage and recycling cans, and centrally located water spigots. The sites are spacious, private and surrounded by trees and or rhododendron. Most sites are next to a rushing creek, but the ones that don’t have a water feature aren’t disappointing due to the cleanliness of the area and lush surroundings.
In addition to the small loop trail at the memorial, there are several other trailheads in the area, one really good one that I will tell you about in my next post on this area! There is also a boat lauch, a beach at Cheoah Point, and Maple Springs lookout is especially nice at sunset that you can head up to after dinner! Btw, if you like to bring all the best for cooking while your camping you should check out Outdoor Cooking.com. They have some great stuff for those of you who have to have it all and feel you “might as well live like kings since your car camping!”
This is one of our favorite places to camp in the Southeast! It is just 3 hours away from our house and it’s well worth the drive for a weekend trip!
Directions:
From Robbinsville take US 129 North around to the other side, look for signs for Cheoah Point but do not turn there, go down the hill about 1 mile or so and start to slow down. Look for sign for Joyce Kilmer (sign on right side of road) but you will want to take a left. Take your next right over the bridge and wind around lake until you see Horse Cove. If you hit SR1127 you just past the Horse Cove Campground.
