Rippin’ it up on Santeetlah

We had so much fun tubing with the kids that we decided to buy some little 2 person Coleman rafts and started bringing them with us camping on one of our 4-1/2 day trips up to Joyce Kilmer. Our favorite site was open so we took that. It’s perfect because you are in total privacy and the spot is situated down in the woods and Santeetlah Creek wraps around the large campsite.

We got set up and still had plenty of daylight left so I got the bright idea to take my two small children and one of said Coleman rafts and headed on foot up the trail along the creek. We got to a spot that seemed a little burly but looked like fun. I decided to put in there which ended up being about a half a mile up the creek from where we started and planned on pulling out back at the campsite. In retrospect, it was probably not the safest thing to do. Within the first 50 feet or so we were already in some pretty decent little rapids and the drop offs were around 5 feet high. One of the shoals was so severe that I had to catch my son in mid-air as we descended and pull him back into the raft. Needless to say, it was a little scary but we all had a great time and now the kids have another story to tell.
