Providence Canyon Road Trip
Feb 20th, 2009 by Admin 1
We are heading south this weekend to check out the backcountry trails at Providence Canyon and do some camping. We have heard some good things about the trails and views from the trail of the “Little Grand Canyon” of the East. The weather looks like its going to be pretty easy going this weekend so we should be able to fit a lot in.
The two main trails are the Canyon Rim Trail and the Backcountry Trail where 5-6 primitive camping sites are accessible along the trail.
The canyon walls were formed from a mixture of the steep topography in the area coupled with massive clearings in the 1800’s for lumber and farming. Once the clearing had taken place and heavy rain had cut through what was left of any erosion-resistant surfaces the sandy soil quickly deteriorated to form what are now canyon walls 150 feet deep in some areas.
We will also be checking out Rood Creek while we are down there and will post on all of it when we return.
