Hiwassee River, TN

So, if you’re like me, you’re already over the too cold temps with no snow, & no outdoor activity. I can’t wait ’til it warms up again and we can take advantage of the natural resources we have in the south.
I’ve been thinking about this little rafting trip we took to the Hiwassee river in Tennesee. We stayed at Quinn Springs campground off of Hwy 30 across the street from the river. The campground itself is nothing to speak of other than it’s an adequate place to rest your head after a long day of hiking and really convenient to the river. We crossed the street and hiked up river with our rafts about 2 to 3 miles. The first day was kind of scary because we put in late afternoon when the dam was opened so the water was moving pretty fast. It was fun, but a short 30 minute ride and we had to fight the current to get out. We decided the next day to go really early while the river was down so we took the same hike to the same put in with very different results. We started out pretty slow, but the water was so clear you could see to the bottom. It was beautiful and clean so we really enjoyed the relaxing pace. There a couple of nice shoals and several small islands to explore. We took our time and did a little island hopping. That time the ride took us 2 1/2 hrs. We had a good time on both rides.
Keep in mind that regardless of the water level helmets and life jackets are required and the river is patrolled. If you need gear, there are several outfitters in the area, but if you don’t want to rent I’m sure the crew at Rock Creek can help you out.
Also, for decent hiking, the John Muir trail(an extension of the Benton MacKaye Trail) is just a few miles down Hwy 30 in Reliance.
Directions:
From Hwy. 64/411 intersection, go north on 411, 11.4 miles to hwy. 30. Turn right, campground entrance is .3 miles on the right.
