Grassy Mountain Tower Trail – Lake Conasauga, Cohutta Wilderness
Not the lushest of surroundings but definitely worth the hike. Follow the Songbird trail from the dam at Lake Conasauga. When the trail comes to a “T”, take a right and follow the sign for the Tower trail. This 2 mile trail is dog friendly and a great Science and Conservation lesson for the kids. There are a few wildlife signs at the beginning, but the Owl Snags
you encounter at the small footbridge are the most interesting. Even if you don’t see any owls, it’s still cool to look at. Once you cross the footbridge the trail becomes a little less attractive, but it soon opens up to the tower road which is heavily lined with wildflowers for most of Spring & Summer.
Though it’s well beaten and we’ve hiked it several times, we’ve never seen anyone else up there so it’s a great place to let an obedient dog off leash for a free run. The trail ends at the fire tower which lends awesome views of the Cohutta Wilderness.
It’s not my favorite trail in the area, but all in all a good experience.
