Exploring the Canyons
Feb 25th, 2009 by Admin 1
Well we’ve posted on the two trails, the Backcountry Trail and Canyon Loop Trail at Providence Canyon, now here is a look inside the canyons.
The early 19th Century mistakes in erosion control while clearing for farming may have come with its ecological disadvantages but it also created quite a natural playground with views I didn’t think were possible in Georgia. If you have not gone and checked this spot out yourself I would recommend it.
The layers of soil, color variations and natural terrain are certainly something you need to experience and not just vicariously through the Internet. Take the kids and check it out and bring a camera.
The “Little Grand Canyon” walls are not like they are in Arches, or Zion or anything. They are extremely fragile and the soft sandy soil will easily deteriorate so try to stay on existing paths. Climbing is not permitted.
Also, if you do take me up on this little trek and you are looking for a decent place to eat while your there, check out the 4-Way Barbecue in nearest town of Lumpkin. Hmm, 4-Way why the strange name? Its, literally an old converted home at a 4-way stop right in town. We were looking for a place before heading out of civilization to camp and this place was the only available spot, or so we were told by a local. This unsuspecting little spot ended up having some good food if you like that sort of thing. One pretty interesting thing was that as we walked up the steps onto the covered porch expecting to find a door when a nice gentleman popped out of a window to take our order. He did, and then just as stealthily retracted back inside to appear out of a different window with our food in about 6-8 minutes.
For these and other trails we have reviewed check out our trails page.
