Conasauga Opens For The Season 4/18/08

I am just going to bump a previous post of mine on Conasauga here and let everyone know what we have been up to. Things have been busy at work for both my wife and I so I have been unintentionally neglecting my part in OGC and Campnpost quite a bit but I was able to break away recently to get up to Lake Conasauga which is one of our favorite local spots for a quick overnighter.
One thing that I am continually reminded of about this place is how it sits directly in the path of just about every weather cycle that comes through Georgia. In other words, if Georgia gets rain, Conasauga gets rain, if Georgia gets heavy wind, Conasauga gets heavy wind. You get the picture.
Something to consider when camping there, other than keeping your food inside your vehicle except when eating to avoid Bear attacks, and preparing for the long drive up the gravel road (10-12 miles depending on your approach), is bring a tarp of some sort to hang out under for those rainy days and pick your site wisely. try to avoid setting up under large branches on questionably healthy trees. Most of the time you will be perfectly fine but it doesn’t hurt to be cognisant of the fact that many of the powerful storms that roll through this area bring with them some brutal winds which could potentially snap branches that are already well on there way to being compromised.
One other thing to think about: Does wind bug you? If so, think about picking a site away from lake even though they look the best. the wind picks up off the lake pretty good some times. There isn’t a bad site up there if you ask me.
As stated in the title and for those curious. Yes its now open, opened on the 18th and the site fee is still $10.
BTW, to the previous camp host John Kerry, haven’t seen you in a while. Hope things are well and you are doing okay!
