Camping at Watkins Glen

One positive thing I can say is the staff is really nice, but the camping at Watkins Glen leaves something to be desired. Imagine the most unattractive, crowded, noisy campground you can imagine and you’ve got Watkins Glen State Park Campground. We stopped there because we love the hike and thought the campground would reflect the beauty of the gorge. We stayed there only because it was getting dark and we had been traveling all day.
It was $27 for a sloped site in an open field (the only one available) that people used as a byway to get to the restroom. There were plenty of nicer unoccupied sites, but they were reserved for whatever reason. The sites were small and even the wooded ones lacked privacy. We were so disenchanted with it that we didn’t even bother to have a fire. We went straight to bed at dark and tried to ignore the noise around us.
We usually choose a more rustic setting. This campground has ammenities we’re not used to like hot showers, playgrounds and a pool. It’s not our thing, it wasn’t completely awful, but if you’re in the area and looking for that type of campground, I’d recommend Keuka Lake State Park instead.
