Appalachian Trail - Approach Trail
Feb 3rd, 2008 by Admin 1
I had one of the best day hikes I have had in a good while. The weather was ridiculously mild for February 2! Of course, I forgot my camera again. I was actually thinking it wouldn’t be that great for pictures but was way off. It was actually very clear and the sky was plenty blue.
My plan is to go back up and park at Springer Mountain and head backwards (hopefully the weather will cooperate) and snap a few shots to upload.
I had forgotten how nice this approach trail was. Its been a couple years since I have been on it. I need to come back to it more often but there are just so many trails and so little time. The lead up to the first crest brought it all back. With it being winter you can really get some nice views out over the hills and the trail has very few people on it which always makes it nice.
I cruised at a considerable pace since I was only doing a day hike and made great time. I had my dog with me and he is still a little young pup but he did okay.
I started at the Amicalola Falls State Park visitors center and headed up the east ridge. When I reached to top of the falls in about 6-8 minutes I knew it was going to be a speed racer type of day. I made it out to Springer Mountain and back in about 4 hours.

Is there camping at the top of Springer? I was hoping to hike to the top in the evening, camp and hike back down in the morning.
thanks
